VDOT’s Richmond District Location & Design Section is seeking an experienced designer to create and review drainage designs for VDOT, municipal and land development roadway projects. You will investigate, evaluate, design, and recommend solutions for drainage problems resulting from construction, maintenance, and citizen complaints. Position will complete work tasks using hydraulic software, Microstation, and other non-CADD applications; and assist in the management of projects/tasks including development of and management of scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports. Position will attend field reviews and project meetings; effectively communicate with VDOT staff, contractors, government agencies and the general public; and analyze and interpret engineering data and information.

Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of civil engineering principles as they relate to hydraulic, roadway design and standard design technical knowledge
• Engineering experience applying roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications, and materials
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering design and analysis programs
• Experience applying peak discharge hydrology, open and closed system design, erosion and sediment control features, and stormwater management
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
• Proficient in hydraulics of bridged waterways, bridge scour analysis, flood routing and calculation of run-off values
• FEMA floodplain experience

Additional Considerations
• Knowledge of VDOT’s Road and Bridge Specifications and Standards
• Knowledge of VDOT drainage policies, design procedures and FEMA policies and procedures to include VDOT’s Drainage Manual
• A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering, or related field desired
• Work experience in transportation and engineering project management
• PE License or EIT certification
• DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Program Administrator, Plan Reviewer, or Inspector Certification
• DEQ Stormwater Management Program Administrator, Plan Reviewer, or Inspector Certification

Special Instructions
Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
