Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking to fill the role of a Transportation Planning Supervisor to serve as the senior transportation planner and coordinate with Districts and Consultants on transportation planning activities and programs. This role will conduct technical analyses to support the Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program, supervise, lead and develop staff.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Transportation Planning Studies

Conduct, manage and participate in transportation planning studies. Conduct traffic forecasting reviews. Collect and analyze data and provide recommendations. Conduct various traffic engineering tasks and utilize planning software to develop solutions.

Team Leadership

Supervise team of engineers, planners and technicians. Assign projects and task, monitor work progress and provide guidance. Promote training and development opportunities.

Contract Management

Manages STARS contract including review of scope and fee, consultant management, bi-weekly meeting with consultants to address any issues, and consultant evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to apply transportation planning and traffic engineering principles and practices to a variety of complex projects.
  • Ability to evaluate and develop innovative solutions for transportation planning and mobility initiatives.
  • Ability to organize and analyze transportation data and data visualization tool.
  • Experience using planning and traffic engineering software.
  • Experience in long-range transportation planning to include forecasting, transportation studies and traffic analyses.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups, including technical staff, elected officials and citizens.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in wiring with diverse audience.
  • Ability to manage staff, programs, and financial resources.

Additional Considerations

  • Progressively responsible experience in transportation planning/traffic engineering.
  • Progressively responsible supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams and other transportation planning professionals on a wide range of transportation-related issues.
  • Experience managing employees, contract management and procurement.
  • Profession Engineer (P.E.) license or American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP) certificate.
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning or related field.
