As a Senior Consultant, Traffic Engineer at WSP, you will bring the leadership and technical skills required to deliver a variety of traffic and transportation related solutions and will provide assistance and guidance in traffic engineering analysis and design for our many local, state and regional clients. You would serve as a technical/task lead on traffic engineering projects for state, local and national clients as well as contribute to the success of projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Qualified candidates should be familiar with HCM methodologies, microsimulation platforms such as VISSIM, conducting traffic analysis/studies utilizing Synchro/Sim Traffic, HCS, and similar analysis tools. Familiarity with agency standards and protocols including VDOT and local municipalities is preferred.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or conduct traffic engineering tasks including, corridor and intersection studies, developing data collection programs, safety analysis, travel demand forecasting.
  • Lead traffic simulation modeling tasks involving Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, SIDRA; experience with VISSIM is a plus.
  • Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies, that require coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Develop and provide oversight for technical reports, summaries, technical presentations. Actively participate in technical meetings and present to stakeholders.
  • Experience with traffic engineering design projects including traffic signal improvements, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Maintenance of Traffic, lighting analysis/design is a plus.
  • Coordinate and assist WSP’s Mid-Atlantic Region with traffic analysis/design related projects.
  • Engage and assist with business development activities related to project pursuits and preparing statements of qualifications and proposals.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5 years minimum relevant post education experience in traffic engineering analysis.
  • Experience in traffic design is a plus.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Prior demonstrated knowledge and experience with DOT projects for state and local clients.
  • Knowledge and experience with traffic analysis softwares including Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, SIDRA and VISSIM (preferred).
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing and making technical presentations.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

 

Preferred Qualifications or “Great to Haves”:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • PE Registration.
  • Prior experience working on VDOT and other local clients in Virginia.
  • Experience with microsimulation tools such as VISSIM, AIMSUN
  • Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
