WSP is currently seeking a motivated Entry Level Traffic Engineer in our Richmond, VA office. Takes part in providing technical assistance in the analysis, design, and operation of traffic engineering projects. Tasks may include basic assistance with performing traffic operational and safety analyses using analysis tools and approved methodologies, assisting with the design, concept development, cost estimates, maintenance of traffic, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), signing and pavement marking design and traffic signal design and timing. Generates accurate and concise documentation (technical reports, design plans, exhibits) regarding assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, assist with traffic engineering projects including corridor studies, safety analysis, traffic forecasting, improvement alternatives development and testing.
- Assist and oversee field traffic data collection and data analysis efforts with limited field work as needed.
- Assist with the development of technical reports, summaries and exhibits.
- Assist with conceptual design, cost estimation, developing technical presentations and actively participate in progress meetings.
- Assist with traffic engineering design projects involving signing/pavement marking, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) design, maintenance of traffic (MOT) and traffic signals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience
- Coursework in traffic/transportation engineering and basic or advanced understanding of traffic engineering operations/safety analysis, travel demand forecasting, and traffic data analysis is required.
- Familiarity with traffic analysis tools including Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, SIDRA, VISSIM and applicable standards such as MUTCD, Highway Safety Manual, AASHTO Green Book.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Microstation, GuidSign and other applicable design software packages is a plus.
- Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Ability to occasionally travel and participate in field work.
Preferred Qualifications or “Great to Haves”:
- Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
- Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
- Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
- A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
