As a Traffic Design Engineer, you will design preliminary and final plans of traffic control devices; work with technical staff to accomplish the design and review of any designs developed by consultants or local jurisdictions; and assure budgets and timelines associated with projects are met. Selected candidate will plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline; maintain project information; and prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations. Position will assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports; and complete multiple concurrent tasks and assignments, and report updates on their status. You will provide guidance in understanding policy requirements, stages of project development, providing training opportunities when necessary and directing consultants when they provide TCD designs; and assure the proper staff attend project meetings throughout the life of the project in order to provide input regarding TCD and ITS designs, potential conflicts and right of way requirements. Position will effectively communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.

Hiring Range: $77,276 – $125,574
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to traffic control devices.
• Knowledge of project development process, policies, guidelines, or regulations related to traffic control devices and ITS elements.
• Ability to plan, coordinate, prioritize multiple assignments within set timeframes.
• Ability to interpret and use construction plans, MUTCD, VA Supplement to MUTCD.
• Ability to train and evaluate the work of others.
• Skilled in MS office software and use of traffic engineer design programs.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
• Valid driver’s license.
Additional Considerations
• EIT Certification or Professional Engineers License.
• Traffic Control Device design, traffic engineering practices, highway civil engineering, report writing, evaluation, research and training.
• Knowledge of traffic control device or roadway lighting electrical systems or experience in electrical engineering
• Knowledge of traffic control device equipment specifications, including traffic signal software and hardware
Special Instructions
Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
