Senior Bridge Engineer

We are pleased to announce that the Richmond District is seeking a professional engineer to analyze, design, check, and draft complex bridge ancillary structures and other structural plans for the Richmond District Structure & Bridge Section (located in South Chesterfield, VA).
You will review designs and analysis of structures; perform load ratings of bridges and other structures; and apply sound engineering judgment. Design and develop complete/accurate plans from preliminary stages to final design; check and review plans; and coordinate project development with other divisions/consultants. You will serve as responsible charge engineer on bridge replacement, repair and rehabilitation projects; assist District Bridge Management in identification, budgeting, scheduling, project development and construction of structures requiring maintenance; conduct on-site emergency evaluations of structural conditions and make recommendations for corrective actions; and provide supervision and leadership to technical staff as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge of Structural Analysis, Mechanics of Materials, geometry, trigonometry, and construction materials. Knowledge of construction procedures which aid in anticipating future field problems or rectifying existing field problems. Ability to determine the size of required structural members and substructure units within the geometric constraints of a given structure. Ability to exercise sound judgment and reason in design procedures. Ability to use computers and structural design and analysis software and drafting software. Ability to provide leadership and technical direction to staff. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.S. in Civil Engineering (Structural Option) or closely related field. Valid Professional Engineer’s License required. Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience performing structural analysis and ratings of existing bridge structures including sign/signal structures. Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and bridge design experience governed by the specification. Shall be capable of independent responsibility for planning, coordination, design, review or supervision of design of complex bridge structures and administration of consultant contracts. Strong project management skills and familiarity with database management and/or developing macros is also desired.
